What is stored
- Your account details (email address and a hashed password).
- The WhatsApp session keys, encrypted, so you do not need to reconnect every time.
- Messages for the dashboard, so you can read along.
What you control
| Setting | Default | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Memory-only mode | Off | Session keys are never written to disk. After a server restart you reconnect. |
| Encryption of session files | On | Session data at rest is encrypted with AES-256-GCM. |
| Show customer numbers to coworker | Off | The coworker sees Customer 1, Customer 2 instead of phone numbers. |
Where
Hetzner, Germany (EU). Backups are encrypted. Processing takes place within the EU.
What the coworker can and cannot see
The coworker only receives new customer messages forwarded after you connect. They do not get your chat list, your history, your groups or your contacts. Compare this with giving a coworker WhatsApp Web.
WhatsApp end-to-end encryption and linked devices
WhatsApp encrypts messages end to end between devices. Every linked device of your account, such as WhatsApp Web on a laptop or InBetween, has its own keys and decrypts the messages it receives; that is how it can show or forward them. So InBetween can read the customer messages it forwards, just as WhatsApp Web can. The forwarded copy reaches your coworker as a normal WhatsApp message in their own app. InBetween does not use the WhatsApp Business API and is not an official Meta product.
Memory-only mode or stored session?
With the default setting the session keys are stored encrypted, so the connection survives a server restart. Memory-only mode keeps the keys in working memory only: nothing about your WhatsApp session is written to disk, but after a restart you scan the QR code or enter the pairing code again. Choose memory-only mode if you prefer that trade-off; keep the default if reconnecting would leave customer messages unanswered for a while.
Checklist before you connect
- Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Settings, Linked devices, and remove devices you no longer use.
- Choose a coworker who is allowed to handle customer questions.
- Leave customer numbers hidden unless the coworker needs them to call back.
- Decide whether you want memory-only mode.
- Mention in your privacy notice that customer messages can be passed to a coworker; see WhatsApp Business and the GDPR.
Disconnecting and stopping
You can disconnect at any time from your phone (Settings, Linked devices) or in the dashboard; forwarding then stops. WhatsApp itself also logs out linked devices when your phone has not been online for about 14 days. Paid plans can be cancelled monthly, and the free Basic plan stays available. For questions about your data, email in.between.techsolutions@gmail.com. The app dashboard is currently in Dutch.
Frequently asked questions
Can InBetween read my private chats?
InBetween processes the messages needed to forward customer messages and show them in your dashboard. Your coworker never sees your other chats.
Is this GDPR compliant?
Data is processed and stored in the EU. As the business you decide which customer conversations are forwarded; mention this in your own privacy notice where relevant.
How do I disconnect?
Log out of the linked device in WhatsApp on your phone (Settings, Linked devices), or disconnect in the dashboard.
Does InBetween break WhatsApp end-to-end encryption?
No. InBetween works as one of your account's linked devices, like WhatsApp Web. Messages stay end-to-end encrypted in transit; like any linked device, InBetween decrypts the messages it receives in order to forward them.
