How to auto forward WhatsApp messages to another phone or number

For anyone who wants WhatsApp messages to land on a different phone, and for businesses that want customer messages to reach the person doing the job.

Short answerWhatsApp has no setting to auto forward or divert messages to another phone or number. You can forward messages by hand, or link a second phone as a linked device so it shows the whole account. For a business number, InBetween forwards every incoming customer message automatically to a number you choose, and the reply goes back to the customer from the business number.

Can you divert WhatsApp messages to another phone?

Not with a setting in WhatsApp. A WhatsApp account belongs to one phone number, and there is no rule like "send everything that arrives here to that number". Call diversion from your mobile provider (for example a divert all calls code) only moves normal phone calls. WhatsApp messages and WhatsApp calls go over the internet and are not diverted.

What you can do depends on what you want: read your own messages on a second phone, pass on a single message, or have customer messages answered by someone else.

How to divert WhatsApp messages to my own second phone

If both phones are yours, the linked devices feature is the closest thing to diverting. Messages then arrive on both phones.

  1. On the second phone, install WhatsApp. On the welcome screen open the menu and choose Link as companion device (Android) or follow the link option on iPhone.
  2. A QR code appears on the second phone.
  3. On your main phone open Settings (iPhone) or the three dots (Android), then Linked devices and Link a device.
  4. Scan the QR code. Your chats sync and new messages appear on both phones.

Do not register the same number again on the second phone: that logs out the first one. More detail: link WhatsApp to another phone.

How to auto forward WhatsApp messages to another number for a business

A linked device is fine for yourself, but not for a coworker: they would see every chat and every customer number. InBetween forwards only the customer messages to one number.

  1. Connect your business WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business number by scanning a QR code or entering a pairing code, the same as WhatsApp Web.
  2. Enter the number that should receive customer messages, for example your technician, office manager or a stand-in during your holiday.
  3. Every incoming customer message, including photos, voice notes, locations and documents, is forwarded to that number as "Customer 1", "Customer 2". The customer's number stays hidden by default.
  4. When the receiver replies, InBetween sends the answer to the customer from your business number.

Need a break? Use Pause and messages stay on the business number as normal. InBetween uses WhatsApp Web linked-device technology, not the official Meta Business API, and the app dashboard is currently only in Dutch.

Good to know

When you do not need forwarding

If you only want your own messages on a tablet or a second phone, linked devices are free and enough. If many people answer customers at the same time, a Business API platform with a shared inbox fits better; see WhatsApp shared inbox. Forwarding fits an owner or office with one or more people doing the work.

Forward customer messages automatically. Replies go back from your number.
