What a WhatsApp ticketing system does
In a ticketing system, every customer question becomes a ticket. A ticket has a number, a coworker, a status such as open, pending or solved, and the full history of the conversation. Teams use it so that no question falls through the cracks, so that a colleague can take over, and so that they can measure how fast questions are answered.
A WhatsApp ticketing system does the same for WhatsApp messages. A new message from a customer opens a ticket in the helpdesk, an agent replies from the helpdesk screen, and the customer receives the reply in WhatsApp. Email, website chat and phone notes often end up in the same ticket list.
Does WhatsApp Business have tickets?
No. The free WhatsApp Business app has no tickets, no coworkers and no statuses. What it does have can work as a simple manual system for one person:
- Labels: give chats a label such as New order or Pending payment, and create your own, for example Waiting for parts.
- Mark as unread: keep a chat visible as open until it is really done.
- Pinned chats: keep the few conversations that need action at the top.
- Quick replies: save standard answers so the same question gets the same answer.
This works as long as one person handles all chats on one phone. Labels are not a shared to-do list: nobody else sees who is working on what. See what the free WhatsApp Business app can and cannot do.
Helpdesk tools with WhatsApp integration
Most helpdesk and ticketing tools connect to WhatsApp through the WhatsApp Business API, either directly or through a provider such as Twilio or 360dialog. Typical examples:
- Zendesk and Freshdesk: offer WhatsApp as a channel next to email and chat. Messages become tickets with coworkers, statuses and reports.
- osTicket: open source and self-hosted, with no built-in WhatsApp channel. You need a third-party plugin or connector, usually on top of a Business API provider. Check who maintains it before you depend on it.
- Shared inbox platforms such as Trengo or Superchat: closer to a team inbox than a classic helpdesk, but also with assigning and statuses. See WhatsApp shared inbox.
To get started you usually need a Meta business account and verification, a number for the API (new, or migrated away from the WhatsApp app), the helpdesk subscription, the provider fee and Meta's fees for some message types. Setup takes days rather than minutes. Prices change often, so check them with each provider; what WhatsApp Business costs explains the cost parts.
When a ticketing system is more than you need
A helpdesk pays off when several agents answer at the same time, questions arrive all day, you need reports on response times, or tickets have to move between departments. Many small businesses have a different question: a customer sends a photo of a leaking tap or asks if the car is ready, and the person who can answer is a technician, a mechanic or the crew lead.
For that, the important part of a ticket is the owner. InBetween does only that part. You connect your existing WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business number by QR code or pairing code, like WhatsApp Web. Each customer message, including photos, voice notes, locations and documents, is forwarded automatically to one coworker. The coworker replies in their own WhatsApp and the customer receives the reply from your business number. Customer numbers are hidden by default ("Customer 1", "Customer 2"). With Pause you stop forwarding temporarily.
Forward customer messages automatically. Replies go back from your number.

Which one should you choose?
- You answer everything yourself: the free Business app with labels and quick replies.
- Several agents, high volume, reports, other channels in one list: a helpdesk with WhatsApp integration on the Business API.
- The customer message should reach the one person doing the job, from your existing number: forwarding with InBetween.
Honest limits of InBetween: it is not a ticketing system, it has no ticket numbers, statuses or reports, each conversation goes to one coworker at a time, it is not an official Meta integration, and the app dashboard is currently only in Dutch. If you outgrow it, move to a helpdesk; your number is not locked to InBetween.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use WhatsApp as a ticketing system?
Not with WhatsApp alone. The Business app has labels, but no tickets, coworkers or statuses. For real tickets you connect a helpdesk such as Zendesk, Freshdesk or osTicket to the WhatsApp Business API.
Does osTicket have WhatsApp integration?
Not built in. osTicket needs a third-party plugin or connector, usually through a WhatsApp Business API provider. Check whether it is still maintained.
Is InBetween a ticketing system?
No. InBetween forwards each customer message to one coworker, who answers in their own WhatsApp. The reply goes back from your business number. There are no tickets or reports.
Is InBetween an official WhatsApp or Meta integration?
No. InBetween uses the same linked-device technology as WhatsApp Web. That is why it works with your existing number and without the WhatsApp Business API. If you need an official Meta integration, a Business API platform is the better fit.
